Colegio de Arte Mayor de la Seda & Torres de Quart
The Colegio del Arte Mayor de la Seda is one of Valencia's most iconic architectural and cultural landmarks, located in the historic neighborhood of Velluters, right in the heart of the city. Founded in 1686, when the ancient Gremi de Velluters was elevated to the prestigious Colegio del Arte Mayor de la Seda by King Charles II, this institution became a vital hub for small silk industry entrepreneurs. The building itself dates back to the 15th century and boasts a Gothic foundation, with its interiors richly adorned with frescos, murals, and mosaics—most notably, the stunning FAMA pavement. The Baroque-style facade features a grand entrance, topped by the intricate cardinal's hat relief of Saint Jerome, the college's patron saint. Thanks to a careful restoration effort led by the Hortensia Herrera Foundation, a piece of both the tangible and intangible history of the city has been preserved. The silk guild once played a significant role in Valencia’s economy and enjoyed international acclaim. Reopened in June 2016, the building now serves as a testament to the city's rich silk heritage. A visit to the college pairs beautifully with a stop at one of Valencia’s most beloved monuments, the Torres de Quart. Built in the 15th century, this former western gate of the medieval city offers not only breathtaking views but also a wealth of Renaissance architectural details, making it a must-see when exploring the city center.
