About this tour

Twenty minutes south of the city, Spain's largest lagoon sits behind a pine-forested sandbar, ringed by rice paddies that have fed Valencia - and named its most famous dish - for a thousand years. This is where paella comes from, and where Valencians drive to watch the sun go down.

We walk the El Saler dunes and pine forest, visit a traditional fishing village where the flat-bottomed boats are still built by hand, and cross the lagoon itself with a local boatman. In autumn and winter the light at dusk is the best of the year.

I grew up with this landscape on the horizon. Expect rice-field ecology, eel fishing, and an honest answer to what belongs in a real paella.
