Utiel-Requena: Land of Wines

4–8 hoursWineUnderground cellarsRound trip included
Rows of bobal vines stretching across the Utiel-Requena plateau

About this tour

An hour west of Valencia the land rises to a plateau of vines - the home of bobal, a grape that grows almost nowhere else and is finally getting the respect it deserves. Requena's old quarter, La Villa, sits on top of a labyrinth: medieval cellars and tunnels cut into the rock beneath the streets, where wine was made and hidden for centuries.

We walk the fortified old town, descend into the underground galleries, and - if you choose the full day - drive out among the vines to a family winery for a proper tasting at the source.

Wine country here is unpolished and real: no tour-bus estates, just people who have made wine for generations and like explaining it.
