About this tour

Alicante is the south's confident capital: the wave-patterned marble of the Explanada under six million mosaic tiles, the old quarter of Santa Cruz climbing in flowerpots and whitewash, and the castle of Santa Bárbara on its rock two hundred metres over the harbour - one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain.

An hour up the coast, Altea is its opposite: a white hilltop old town around a blue-domed church, lanes of bougainvillea and pebble mosaics, and a seafront that painters have been failing to capture for a century.

We take both in one generous day - city energy in the morning, white-village calm in the afternoon, and the coast road in between.
